It’s About Grooming, Love, & Hope
The Grooming Project, a state-certified grooming school and social services agency in Kansas City, MO, opened its doors in 2016 as a unique way to help combat generational poverty. As a 501(c)(3) workforce development program, we help struggling parents get back on their feet through training in the living-wage trade of pet grooming, while providing them and their children with a multitude of wrap-around services. 42 parents (and counting!) have graduated our program and found meaningful, family-supporting work in the field of pet grooming throughout Kansas City. You can learn more about our school and its work in the heart of the city here.
Our new Lee’s Summit salon is the next phase of our program, reserved for our highest-performing graduates. After completing their training and working in a salon full-time for at least one year, graduates can apply for one of two management internships at the salon. Interns not only continue to groom pets daily, but they also learn business management skills, such as staff management, marketing, customer service, and business financial literacy, all under the guidance of Grooming Project staff.
The Salon gives its customers a unique opportunity to have their pets groomed by professionals in a brand-new facility, while also helping local families thrive. Here are just a few of the ways in which our salon is unique:
All of our employees receive living-wage pay (a minimum of $15/hour, plus tips).
As a 501(c)3, all salon proceeds are funneled back to our school to support our work lifting families out of poverty.
Interns work with multiple mentors and complete business classes while completing their internship.
All of our graduates have completed 644 hours of grooming instruction.
Our animal-loving staff is excited to meet you and your pets!
Management Intern & Pet Stylist
Christine is a graduate of The Grooming Project’s very first class in 2016. For the past 2.5 years she has worked as a dog and cat groomer in Kansas City.
Christine has always loved animals, but her initial motivation for enrolling at The Grooming Project was to remove her kids from the cycle of generational poverty that had afflicted her family. She found more than that, though–a true passion for grooming and for helping animals.
After completing her year-long internship at The Salon, Christine plans to open a mobile grooming business that will allow her to groom animals in the comfort of their own homes and provide an easier way for the elderly or those with limited transportation options to care for their animals. “I want to be able to give back to my community. I also want to support The Grooming Project as they have supported me.”
In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her 4 year old son and 8 year old daughter and watch movies.
Management Intern & Pet Stylist
Lindsey was a graduate of the second class at The Grooming Project, graduating in January of 2017. Since then she has worked as a groomer at Dog Pawz in Leawood, KS.
The decision to become a groomer was an easy one for Lindsey, who grew up in a house in which their pet dog was treated like family. As a teen mom, The Grooming Project’s mission was particularly helpful. “I was a teen mom, and I’m proud of the path I took to get where I am. I did not let my struggles define me–I turned them into lessons and power. That’s what motivates me.”
After her internship, Lindsey plans to open a salon that will allow her to provide for her family. “I just want to give my daughter someone to be proud of and and rely on. And I want to make my mother proud.”
Lindsey is mom to Lylah, 9. She loves listening to loud music while driving, spending time with family and friends, and spreading good, positive vibes.
It’s about grooming, love, and hope.
